2017 Patio Season Trends

We spend so much time outside that making our backyard spaces inviting and inspiring has become an increasingly popular trend in home and interior design magazines. This year, patios are kicking it up a notch and inviting new textures, colours and styles into the space.

We've rounded up a few 2017 patio trends that have caught our eye.

1. Bring the indoors out

Say goodbye to the standard umbrella table with white plastic chairs. This season, patios and porches are taking a few notes from the living room. Dining tables will always be popular outside, but we're seeing a lot more setups that are reminiscent of a lounge. This can be as minimalistic or elaborate as you like.

Take, for example, this outdoor space imagined by Ikea. You can barely tell this space is outdoors as so many key figures we usually find in a living room have beenincorporated.

You don't have to be this committed though. This one from Yard Surfer is a simpler version that still invites a more casual vibe and aesthetic without sacrificing modern taste.

2. Boho outdoor rugs and patterned throw pillows

Patio decor has been reimagined with gorgeous new outdoor fabrics that invite infinite possibilities to your outdoor space.  We love this idea board put together by designer Sarah Zulsdorf. It shows the trend towards bohemian fabrics, patterns and colours that are taking over patios everywhere. Throw pillows and rugs are a quick and easy way to truly brighten up your space and add a chic touch without breaking the bank.

3. Cuban quarter

Although boho trends continue to be popular, a whole world of inspiration awaits. We love this slideshow of Cuban influences put together by Lowe's Canada. Much like the boho trend, Cuban culture is all about colour. Bold oranges, reds and blues make up the decor, while woven whicker furnishings, outdoor heaters and fire pits celebrate Cuban warmth.

Have you ever thought about painting the back of your house a different colour? It could be a way to truly pull your space together and create the destination of your dreams right in your backyard. This rustic red is captivating.

4. Urban balcony oasis

Even balconies can be turned into a petite patio paradise. Transforming a small space into a personal oasis is one of the hottest trends this season. You can incorporate elements of the boho charm we mentioned above, or completely modernize it to suit your tastes with a more urban style. Here are some examples of beautiful balconies we found on Pinterest.

5. Bold patioware

Who says the kitchen gets to have all the fun? Transfer the patterns to your patio dinner plates with unique designs that add personality and fun to your outdoor tableware (or patioware as its becoming known).

Bold tropical pineapples, hip nautical designs and rustic cottage dishes with a modern flare are just some of the settings we've been noticing. These cute lobster ones were spotted at Linen Chest, but we've seen them all over including discount stores like HomeSense. Who needs throwaway paper plates when every night can be a lobster dinner?

All of these ideas can be implemented without having to make any major changes to your home or outdoor space. If you do end up giving your patio a makeover and adding new furniture, you may want to revisit your contents coverage in your home insurance policy to ensure you still have adequate coverage.
